A Gentleman in FALL!

Its the best of the best for the Fall season and it’s a part of your wardrobe that you can only use this type of year. Enjoy the weather outside without compromising the look you want to present.

This weeks post for the FALL COLLABORATION is one that I have been looking forward to!! With the change of weather comes a much needed transformation to your wardrobe.  The sandals and shorts go back in the closet while coats and sweaters come out and you prep footwear for snow and ice.  The temperature permits layers and this allow for a different look.  I’m going to present different options for any situation.  These articles of clothing are going to complete a tighter, clean, and fitted look.  This post would have a bazillion words if it described ALL the styles possible.  Nonetheless, the following is the look I strive for during Fall and Winter.

Jackets or coats are very important as Fall takes a tighter grasp on the air around you.  It gets cold and windy and you will need something to keep you warm without decompressing your look.  For this, I suggest you have at least 3 different types of jackets/coats.  I’ll explain why next:

The heavy coat is essential for when you have to really dress it up.  An elegant dinner or get-together will require that your outfit be more on the business side of the spectrum.  Throwing a sweat shirt with you alma mater will not due in this case (No offense intended).  If you are going to wear a tie or a blazer with a suit, then one of these is a must.  They sell longer trench coats which appear fancier but it is all about preference here.  Explore your options.

A leather jacket is necessary because it establishes that you mean business in a casual way.  If you ever saw those movies where the guy is on a dirt bike and its starting to get “dirty” you’ll understand what I mean.  The leather jacket just means that you are a bad-ass but your overall outfit can be more relaxed.  The styles vary but I prefer a beltline length and a sleek look.  You can wear this with multiples outfits and combinations of shoes or boots and jeans.

The last jacket is something that you can wear in those super casual moments.  This is for those midnight runs to Wal Mart in your sweat pants!  It works well because sometimes you don’t feel like a businessman or a Casanova but just want something to keep you warm but collected.  These are just a few options but again you can use your imagination.

Sweaters are most important while Fall transitions to Winter but even then you can add to your layered look.  With so many styles and cuts, you need to stock up on a few “staple” sweaters or cardigans to beef up your wardrobe.

Make sure you avoid over-sizing which we tend to do.  Avoid clothing that makes you look exaggeratingly square and that are too loud with buttons and flaps.  Extra material makes you look extra big.  Try to stick to a neutral color that you can pair with almost everything.  I prefer a black or a grey but with so many options – go crazy.

Its the best of the best for the Fall season and it’s a part of your wardrobe that you can only use this type of year.  Enjoy the weather outside without compromising the look you want to present.

The Observation Post – Pretend

When is it okay to pretend?  Is it ever okay to pretend?  It’s not always healthy to pretend but we tend to do this more often than we think.  We do this not to fulfill our passion or personal obligations but usually to make someone else happy.  What was the tearing sound I just heard?  Oh… That was you cutting yourself short in life.

More often than we would like to admit we sacrifice so much in order to fulfill our roles as parents, children, employees, and so on.  This becomes almost mundane and we become complacent in doing so.  This cycle of Pretend is on a regular basis and we start to forget how much we put up a facade in our day to day.

I believe that it does not have to be this way.  To pretend is to deceive and to lie.  We can dance around this but in the end it all comes down to that.  Pretending is not facing the truth head on.  So when a father pretends to want to spent time with his kids – ouch.  Or when a daughter pretends to be busy to avoid taking mother or grandma shopping – dang.   These actions are not shameful nor counterproductive to life.  It’s the total opposite when you think of it.  That’s what our time is for.  To give it; to lend it to make not only ourselves happy but to impact others.

You see, if we really knew what our roles were and what our responsibilities before God were then we would never fail at our roles.  Perfection is not a factor here because we all fail at some point but to fail means you tried; you acted.  What about those that don’t act at all because they feel they are wasting their time?  What about those that don’t feel the joy of their role in life anymore?  Those of us that pretend to be happy but struggle internally with reality?

This post doesn’t pretend to have answers.  I do feel however that it does plenty by shedding the spot light on it for you.  It brings it to mind enough to where you have to ask yourself what your circumstances are.  Are you pretending a lot or do you feel that it comes naturally?  Are there days that you want to run away and what do you do to resolve that impatience?

Pretending is a skill that writers such as us, develop and put into practice when we are sharing our stories.  In that circumstance it is socially acceptable to pretend.  The sad fact is that a lot of us pretend so that we can escape our lives and our obligations.  This is socially acceptable as well but personally, I don’t want to.. No, more like I can’t let go of the wheel like this.  This is why I pray that God returns the joy of my roles or privileges in life.  Whether I am a son, father, uncle, servant, or laborer I want to strive to take pleasure in what I GET to be and not what I HAVE to be.

A Big Thank You!

This is not an exaltation of the internet. Far from it because these never cease from being machines.

With today’s post, I simply wanted to extend A Big Thank You!!

This is something that I have seen a lot my favorite bloggers do and I’m starting to understand the reasons why.

I recently hit 70+ followers on Wither or Thrive and this blows me away.  Partially because I have only had this blog for about 2 years but it’s only been in the last 60 days that I have let my “Inner Child” roam free with muses and thoughts.  The other half is because I would have never thought that in such a short time frame I would have the privilege of being surrounded and furthermore supported, by brilliant people and writers from all over the globe.  We have to remember that once upon a time if you didn’t catch a railroad or boat to the other side of the world there was no hoping of connecting.  But now, thankfully while we are at it, the conversation can be had at a click of the button; the exchange of humanity and making a good impression and comradery takes but seconds.

We learn faster today; we see further.  We speak many languages at once; we can see through a different set of eyes like never before.  It’s amazing at was is possible and at what opportunities are just around the corner every day.

This is not an exaltation of the internet.  Far from it because these never cease from being machines.  They speak of AI and what not, but for now all I see is a screen that doesn’t show what you don’t ask it to.  I see a mouse that does not engage what you don’t wish it to.  A keyboard that does not speak on its own but awaits your command.

This is why the exaltation is for you – My Reader.  Thank you because you choose to come here.  Thank you because you decide that Wither and Thrive, if only for a second, should show up on your screen.  Thank you because you decide when a post calls your name and you click it.  Thank you for those times that you feel compelled to leave a comment – Wither and Thrive does not take for granted those precious seconds of your time that you choose to invest here!

From the bottom of our hearts – Thank you and happy writing.  Happy writing because to me, every one of you is more than just a hobbyist.  There are the makings of a great writer and wordsmith in you and you are slowly introducing him/her to the world.  I appreciate the courage, can’t wait for more and love your work!  Every single one of you.

REGNAT POPULUS! Arkansas in the Fall: Top 5!

I had the opportunity to live in many states but Arkansas has got to be the most interesting and diverse!

With this chapter of the FALL COLLABORATION, I have the great privilege of introducing readers to the great state of Arkansas!!   I had the opportunity to live in many states but Arkansas has got to be the most interesting and diverse!  It goes without saying that in 1863 when Arkansas was admitted into the Union the motto was Regnat populus – which translates to “The People Rule!”  The following is a list of some of the great places to visit and events to attend when Fall comes to The Natural States.

1- Thorncrown Chapel        Eureka Springs, AR               All Year Round  thorcrown

Over six million people have visited this magical chapel since it was opened in 1980.  This magnificent piece of architecture was placed fourth on the list of the top buildings of the twentieth century.  You can visit it any time of year but the fall colors are what make this place a delightful venue for weddings and sightseeing.  The town that it is in is also amazing and has that perfect small-town vibe offering big-time laughs and entertainment.

2- Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair    Fort Smith, AR        September 23 – October 1

The Fair is a must-see!  People come from all over in order to get in on the larger-than-life drumsticks, the amazing cotton candy art, the Livestock and Creative Arts Competitions, the Fair Rides, Concerts, Rodeo, and so much more.  The Fair takes place in a lot of different places all at once.  It just depends on if you want to see a Hypnotist, if you’re interested in the Kachunga Alligator Show, or if you want to see all the shows and concerts at Kay Rogers Park.  There is something for everyone in the family at the State Fair and it opens its doors only in the Fall.

3- Mount Magazine State Park                                     All Year Roundasp_mtmag_2014_img_lg_08

Fall has never looked so spectacular.  Even though it takes a little more time for the changes in color to come over this state park, the Fall weather makes it the perfect time to hit the trails.  Hiking, lodging and cabins, horseback riding, canoes on a lake, rafting over rapids, mountain biking, hang gliding, ATV tours, and camping are all available here.  If one of the listed options doesn’t make you smile with excitement, I going to guess that it’s because you have never tried it before!  Word to the wise – get to Mount Magazine and “Just Do Et.”

4-  Fayetteville, AR & Razorback Stadium                   Septemter 3 – Novermber 25

razorback-stadium-1I decided to link the two because of their mutual existence.  Fayetteville is a young vibrant city full of energy, commerce, health, and beauty.  Part of what makes this town so popular and bustling is the University of Arkansas campus that is nestled right in the heart of this place.  For the sports fan in the state, this is the place to be to see Razorback Football, Basketball, and all other college division sports.  Fayetteville is also home to the infamous Dickson Street!  Bars and live bands, the best food, and entertainment at your fingertips.  Needless to say, this college town is much more than a college town now and to visit it is to see something new every time!

5- Magic Springs & Crystal Falls

Magic Screams     Oct 8 – Oct 30    &    Cooler Sundays    Sept 23 – Oct 30

Located in beautiful Hot Springs, AR, this water and theme park offers a load of fun for all the family!  With admission to both at the same time you are sure to get your share of soaking and thrill-seeking fun!  The special events offered through Fall are Magic Screams and Cooler Sundays.  Magic Scream is Halloween town all over the place.  Ghost and ghouls jumping out at every corner, witches flying over-head, and waiting in line for a ride or game is not boring anymore when werewolves are trying to snatch you!  It’s a whole lot of fun and will definitely keep you giggling and on your toes.  Cooler Sundays is the opportunity to bring a cooler full of any goody that you want into the park with you at time of admission !!  Sound crazy?  It is but Magic Springs offers it every year.  This way you can have lots of fun and be able to carry your favorite snacks with you everywhere you go.

With so much to do and so much to see, Arkansas allows you to wake up every morning and experience something fresh and exciting.  Sometimes the only thing that lacks is the energy to keep up with all there is to visit!!

Many more where those came from and throughout the FALL COLLABORATION, I will be sharing more of the place I call home with all our readers.  Make sure to check out my fellow collaborators below as they share their homes with you and what do to “When In Rome… In Fall.”

Cheers!

Observation Post – Together

Together we can accomplish so much more.  I say that metaphorically but it is tested and proven metaphysically; in the material world.  When I saw that the writing prompt for today was “Together”, it triggered a reminiscence where I recounted all the “Togetherness” I had experienced in my life recently.

There’s nothing like a tough situation to bring people together.  As humans, there is an automatice reaction when we see someone trudging along – to pull them forward.  Needless to say, not everyone reacts in this matter but I’m proud to say that 90 percent give themselves to help.

But I have recently experienced the contrary of that.  What happens when you meet someone that gives everything to help even though there is no dilemma?  Someone that has the spirit of the Good Samaritan and not just someone that feels obligated at a certain moment to help.

I have been more the latter than I wish was true.  But it’s been something that I have been learning about and can say I’m determined to turn it around.

As a country we have been through so much; as a people diverse in color, religion, customs, and skills, we have been tested and tried.  The American Spirit is not a sham; to me is it real.  Yet is does not belong to America!!  It’s the Human Spirit, if you will, that feels drawn to its natural state – to help, to serve, to care, to give.  But it seems that 90 percent of the populations only allows their guard down when a mass-scale natural disaster strikes affecting millions.  Yet when it comes to helping the little oils lady across the street we don’t look twice.  Or when we pass a car in the middle of the road with the emergency lights on we are way to busy to see if we can assist.

No one is discrediting anyone here; on the contrary, I gain my perspective on this issue from the very real struggles that our country has endured and from the amazing outpouring of perseverance and good will that I have witnessed.  But as in most posts on Wither Or Thrive – can’t we do more?  Can’t we move from the large scale and start to work on the small details?  After all, those are the ones that make a difference every single day.

So this is me talking to me.  And really, I believe that this is God talking to me.  It’s time I wake up and look around and step out of my box.  To give should not be easy; do it anyway.  To help should come with sacrifice; help more. To be selfless means to do it everyday, not just every now and then when your neighbor or community shows initiative which in turns sparks yours.  I am going to try my best from now because that a more TOGETHER than we have ever been and that’s what the world needs today.

Chicken Parm you taste so good!

As a man that lives in Merica, and lives in southern Merica, and loves Merica until the day that I die – I LOVE ME SOME FOOTBALL!!

For the second installment of our FALL COLLABORATION, the gang and I are going to take you through the steps on how to prepare for Primetime NFL Action!   As a man that lives in Merica, and lives in southern Merica, and loves Merica until the day that I die – I LOVE ME SOME FOOTBALL!!  Hank Williams Jr. was more famous in my home than Justin Timberlake or 98 Degrees because when you heard “Are You Ready For Some Football?” on the television – you knew it was bout to go down!   Monday night and Sundays were huge for us because that’s when the family came together for yet another fun and exciting time.  At my house, we had cousins come over with uncles and friends!  We had great food, jokes, rivalries, and you were sure to laugh your gut sore.

Now in days its no different!  There is a deep and thick love for the game of football in this country.  It stems from the rich history of great athletes that have set foot on the Grid Iron and from some of the most explosive last-minute plays!  Games that garnered the attention of more sets of eyes at one moment than anything else in the world!  Yes, that big!  So besides watching the game, allowing yourself to feel energy and excitement of the crowd and players, there are a few things that I find help me get the most of it!  You should adopt the following as your SOP for the duration of the season.

~Everyone Coming Over Needs A Jersey.  If Not, Just Go Home.

The Eyes of the experience.  We gather to yell and jump and fist pump our team to victory!!  The best thing you can do is wear your colors; wear the jersey of your favorite player!  This way, when they win, you can just throw the hot wings in your hand at the curtains and run into the street!  There you will be met by your strange and funky neighbors.  But today, you are fans!  So nothing else matters as you jump up to Belly Bump’em.  The smartest thing to do is to buy a quality jersey that will last you year after year.  If you are like me, I like to have somewhat of a collection, so I try to buy a new one every other year or so.  It can even be a T-Shirt with the logo of the team and team colors, but you can not show up to my house without colors.  Get with it!

~ The Food Must Be Spot On!!

Guacamole and Chips, Barbecue Chicken Nachos, Pigs In A Blanket, Bacon-Wrapped Potatoes with Creamy Dill Sauce, Barbecue Meatball Sliders, Kickin Chicken Nuggets, Grilled Chicken, Smoked Pork Ribs, and BUFFALO WINGS!!!  You don’t want me to go on, trust me.  I have limited GB space on this WordPress deal.  The food must make your mouth water.  It’s what catches the attention of that Nose of yours.  You enter the living room with the flat screen on the wall, but your nose takes you right into the kitchen to start to pick at the food!  When the belly can feast, the Beast is at peace.  It’s essential, and there are so many great recipes for you to try every single game.  You grab a plate full of food, grab a cold drink, then sit in front of the game to cheer and scream without running the risk of being famished.

~If The Stakes Aren’t High, Baby Bye, Bye, Bye!

JT reference there…  A fun thing that we like to do is make bets on a game.  Occasionally we will put a dollar or two in on a play for fun, but we like to up the ante!  This is why, as a general rule, I like to keep a bottle of scorching and spicy sauce in my cupboards.  This way the losing side knows that it has to pick a finger food then put the spicy sauce on it – and they don’t get water or milk! Not in my house!  Mwuahahahahaha.  It works well for pranks all year long too.  Dope.  Score.  For the guys, we have the losers leave the house without their jersey on (or any shirt at that matter).  For the ladies, especially from November through the Ship, they have them leave the house without their jersey on and their shoes and socks.  It’s usually frigid.  Something to add more punishment.

This list can go on forever and with a new season just around the corner every time, I love to add new things to make it a good time.  If you can catch a game live, you can take all of this to the tailgate parties that get way out there!!  It’s no longer your home where you have “control” – if it’s not OUT OF CONTROL it’s not TAILGATING.  Without all of the extravaganza and hype, the most pleasurable things for me is to surround myself with people that can laugh and have fun.  Surround yourself with people that love one of the above, and Football if possible, and you are sure to have a great night!  That’s what it is all about in the end – having an excuse to put down the phone, turn off your laptop or computer, put away your work, and live it up with family and friends.

Needless to say that my favorite NFL team are the Denver Broncos!  I grew up in Denver and still have family there.  The Mile High City is near and dear to my heart.  And since I live in Arkansas, well…

The title comes from a great commercial featuring Super Bowl 50 Champ Peyton Manning.  I’m sure you have seen it and I’m sure it annoys you by now!

I will always remember Coach Almonds class…

I remember that I was in the Seventh Grade.  I was in Social Studies with my best friend, Jason B.  We had Coach Almond in that class which meant a lot of fun and jokes!  It was a great way to start off your day; we loved first period.

On that day, we were studying for a quiz in groups.  Naturally, this meant that Jason and I were our own group and we were talking and laughing about everything else but the quiz.

In comes Mr. Marshall, the principle.  “Hey!  Have you heard what’s going on?”

The smile on Coach Almonds face lost its perk.  “No… What’s up?”

“Does this TV work?” Replied Marshall.  He plugged it into the wall and started to scan for channels.  In a matter of seconds, there it was.  It was the image of two large buildings; somewhere in a big city, and one was on fire.  I could tell there was fire because of all of the smoke emanating from its side.

“It’s all over the news.  It was an airplane.”  Marshall motioned for Coach Almond to get nearer.  “We are going to go about our day as normal.  When we figure things out, we can answer questions.  Sad part is that when they get home that’s all they are going to hear; about the attacks.”

One girl on the other side of the room started to cry.  She asked what that was and why did it happened.

Coach Almond looked at all of us and said, “Don’t worry kiddos, everything is fine here at home.  But somewhere real close someone is going to need your prayers.  Those of you and your family.”

Justin spoke up and said, “But what’s going on?  We don’t even know what’s going on.”

Coach Almond turned around and turned off the TV.  “Soon, you will.  The whole world will.  And it will change everything.”

My remembrance of September 11, 2001, is specific.  I was too young and too involved in my own things to appreciate it back then, but I know now that many had to give their lives to save lives.  Men and women that put others first, and gave their all to help.  Those are the people that we respect and that we miss.  We will always be Stumped as to how they got in and who’s fault was it that they were successful at causing us pain.  But now that’s a waste of time.  Instead let us remember those that didn’t hesitate to act, at a seconds notice, when push really turned to shove.

We love you all.  We needed you and you were there.  We need you still but understand the determination you had to save others.

You can read the names of those that were present here.

God Rewards Faithfulness

This is because he criticizes her, while she is criticizing them, and all they do is talk about him. But who doesn’t have something to point out? Who amongst us walks on a fine line and is clean?

A lot of the times, no matter where you live or what era you were born into, criticism will always find its way to your ears.  This is because he criticizes her, while she is criticizing them, and all they do is talk about him.  But who doesn’t have something to point out?  Who amongst us walks on a fine line and is clean?  Sparkling white Joe does not exist.  The only one that should and can be commended is Jesus.

Returning to our the first sentence, what do you do when criticism catches your ear?  Not only criticism of others but the worst yet – criticism of yourself.  It can be a stranger on the subway, a friend from college, a co-worker, or even a family member at a reunion.  What happens inside you when your short-comings as a person are voiced; brought to light?

  • It’s not easy to hear.

Its probably one of the hardest things to hear.  When someone says to your face what makes you a “Not so perfect” person.  Adding to injury is the fact that most of the times, these conversations happen in a heated moment.  Your palms get sweaty, your cheeks flush red, your forehead perspires, your voice gets shaky, and your blood boils.  Whether we are angry with each other, or getting fired at work, or stressed on a project and the work group is falling apart, these moments hit us like a bunch of bricks in the face.

  • But we do need to hear it.

Not the popular idea or opinion, yes, I know.  Now, aside from the heated debate scenario, criticism can be subjective.  Just because someone says that you don’t know how to shoot a basketball doesn’t make them an expert.  Make sure you take these comments with a grain of salt.  But what if no one ever told us what we were doing wrong?  What if someone never pointed out a way you can do what you do more efficiently?  If we are honest with ourselves, its hard to see what is least useful in our character.  Its difficult at times to say, “No, Im wrong here.  I need to do this a different way.”  You might even say its a blessing to hear this.  Or are we waiting for a voice to come from heaven to let us know that there is a different way?

But all this is just a small example of a test.  The Bible talks about tests or trials where our person is put through fire.  It is, or course, the very minimal of all the of the tests and trials that we can face but then why does it bother us so much?  Why is it that we allow those words to shake our faith?  This is not to say that we couldn’t use a good slapping around once in a while.  Im talking about spiritually even though I know that you are thinking of that one person that could use a slapping around physically too.  It doesn’t hurt to heed words of wisdom that scrape against our personality like stone on stone.  Do you know what happens to gold after it is dug out of the dirt?  It is put through fire so that it can be shinier, more sparkling, more precious, more valuable, more useful gold!  But why all of the hassle?  Gold is Gold is Gold.  Thats because there is a standard and even though you ignore that standard, it doesn’t mean its not there.  We have to be careful to ignore those words of wisdom and lose an opportunity to improve; to grow.  It would be such a waste if we were always the same son or daughter, dad or mother, or friend.  How many times have you promised to react differently, in a better fashion, the next time you are put in “that” situation?  We should be improving everyday!!!  So why don’t we try?

I wanted to touch on this subject because sooner or later it will happen.  There will come a time where enough eyes are on you and the criticism starts.  You might even already be there.  Not much is needed though.  It could be the person that you sleep next too…every…single…night.  But don’t let that steal the smile from your face because in all of that, God is watching.  He wants to know that you can keep the faith in him regardless of what men can say.  You are a work of his in progress but we have to accept that.  We have to accept that a work in progress is not perfect and occasionally, just once in a while, someones going to put up a mirror.  But you have to find solace in faith, let it Recharge you, go with the flow, keep walking, and show God that you want to be faithful amidst your short-comings.

The Years Go By Like The Waters In Our Lovers Eyes

Its one of the most powerful sentiments and word of wisdom that has ever graced a human ear and blessed the trajectory of a lifetime

Stop.  Click on this song by Needtobreathe.  Wait a few seconds for the music to start playing…..

Now continue reading.

Its one of the most powerful sentiments and word of wisdom that has ever graced a human ear and blessed the trajectory of a lifetime:

“You Only Know What You Have, Once You’ve Lost It.”

In order for that wisdom to exist, someone had to go through heart ache.  Someone had to lose.  Someone had to feel foolish.  Eyes had to be open; eyes that were once blind.  Second chances exist and for this we are all grateful.  Nonetheless, they do not exist for all and for some, they have only known eternal short-coming; an inconsolable oust.

So let us learn from those that have come before us and have been kind of enough to lecture our very situation or circumstance.  Hold on to who you have; never let go of what you have and what it could be.  Before you know it, like stones under rushing waters, the years will have past; opportunities will have ceased; hearts will have fluttered for you or become bitter at your blunder.

Just be sure to take a step back every now and then.  Be grateful and appreciate; realize everyday that the love and joy around you is not of your devise, but in spite of it.  This song is by a great band that I will leave you with.  The purpose of including the link is not to name drop or click-bait.  Listen to the song.  The lyrics are included for your consideration.  Take another listen if you fancy, I know it will do some good.

“Why don’t we dance anymore
I’m not okay with that
Why don’t we laugh anymore
I’m not okay with that
The years go by like stones under rushing water
We only know, we only know when it’s gone
Yeah, the years go by like stones under rushing water
We only know, we only know when it’s gone
Why don’t we smile anymore
I’m not okay with that
Why don’t we dance slowly
I’m not okay with that
‘Cause the years go by like stones under rushing water
We only know, we only know when it’s gone
Yeah, the years go by like stones under rushing water
We only know, we only know when it’s gone

Oh the years, go by, like the waters, in our lovers eyes

Oh the years, go by, like the waters, in our lovers eyes”
