Stop, Squat, and Run

I looked at Tenant A with my jaw about touching the floor and she said, “…and it’s still lying out front because I wanted you to see it.

Where I work, the term “Juicy” is most often used to describe gossip.  The kind of gossip that will ruffle feathers and has the potential to start a war.

On one such occasion, I received a phone call from a tenant that usually keeps to herself and tries to avoid problems.  She let me know that for the past week, the person that lived across the road from her was spreading rumors implicating a lot of the community of conspiring against her.  She called to let me know that if that person came to me talking about everyone else that I shouldn’t believe everything that she says.  We will call the person calling Tenant A, and the person causing problems Tenant B.

At this point, I was not fully sure of what was going on but I knew that as time went by I would hear the whole story.

Just then, the phone rang again for me.  It was Tenant B calling to speak with me.  I answered the phone and sure enough, she called to let me in on the “Juicy” events that were taking place around the community.

Tenant B let me know that Tenant A, along with Tenant C and Tenant D, were talking about her while they drank tea and coffee every morning on Tenant A’s front porch.  She let me know that she could hear them whisper about her.  She also let me know that she had spoken to a few other tenants and they verified that those 3 were saying that she was abusing prescriptions and that she was not healthy.  This infuriated her and she wanted me to step in.

I scratched my head and let her know that these were unsubstantiated rumors.  I let her know that she should just ignore them, ignore the supposed comments, and move on with her life.

She didn’t like my response very much.  She told me that it was on my head what happened next because she was not going to put up with it.  She hung up and I heard nothing else from her.

A few days past and Tenant A called to speak with me.  She told me that ever since the commotion in the community started a few weeks ago she decided to install a camera facing her front porch.  She spoke with the local law enforcement and they assured her that just so long as no other front doors were being video taped it was legal.  She asked me to come by her home today and watch some footage.  She warned me – before I entered her yard to watch my step.

I showed up and we began to watch the footage from the night before.  It was about 3:30 am on the video and into the frame walks a figure to the yard of Tenant A.  The footage shows this person or individual pulling down their pants, squatting down, and doing their business on the front lawn.  They swiftly pull up their trousers and run away.  In what direction?  Straight across the street.  Its hard to tell the face or any descriptive details from the dark video but the deed that they did do was unmistakable.  I looked at Tenant A with my jaw about touching the floor and she said, “…and it’s still lying out front because I wanted you to see it.  I told you this was a juicy one.”

The Ghosts and Ghouls of La Raza

There are a lot of spiritualists and occultists in Mexico.

On this week’s post for the FALL COLLABORATION, we wanted to share ghost and horror stories with our readers.  We are just days aways from Halloween and it only seems appropriate.

There are a lot of spiritualists and occultists in Mexico.  There are certain parts of the country that are known to host gatherings of witches and wizards.  There are even rumors of drug cartels stealing people and selling them to these occultists for human sacrifice.  Needless to say, there is a whole box full of horror stories and urban legends that run wild in the culture.  I’ll share just a few of them with you.

kl6cdmcbunnuy

La Llorona, or The Weeping Woman, is one of the most popular and memorable of ghosts and ghouls.  It is a legend that is iconic amongst the youth of Latin America.  The story of the Llorona is so famous because parents use it to keep children quiet at night and to keep them from going out late at night.  The story says that a women drowned her children in a river in Mexico as revenge.  Her husband had left her for another women and so in her rage she killed her own children.  After doing so, she came back to her senses and could not live with herself after what she had done.  She decides to drown herself so that she does not have to feel that immense pain of loss that is only found on Earth.  The problem is at heaven’s gate where they tell her that she can not enter until after she finds her missing children.  She is then forced to roam the Earth where she seeks children that resemble her own so that she can enter heaven.  She does so only at night and will prey on those that are alone or in small groups.  Since she feels the pain of loss on Earth, those that have had encounters with her say that she cries and yells, “Mis hijos.  Ay,  mis hijos.”  This translates to, “My children.  Oh, my children.”  If you hear her cry then you are marked for life and she will visit you wanting to take you.  The few that have seen her face are never the same.

w6xjdpeqn98is

El Chupacabra is a blood-sucking beast that preys on livestock and humans alike.  This monster story was born after many animals in Latin America were attacked and left with bite marks on their necks.  They were also without one ounce of blood in your bodies.  After the initial attacks, farmers started to take up arms and keep watch.  This is when the first sightings happened.  They are described in many different fashions but all accounts give a few agreeable traits.  They have large red eyes, resemble a dog in many ways but that can walk upright, and they have fangs.  Of course, no one has ever caught one but nonetheless the legend prevails and there are still occasional attacks here and there.  It is said that if you live in rural parts of Latin America you could be attacked by one and your blood sucked right out of your body.  This is a big part of why children will not go into a barn alone anymore.  They are afraid they will walk in on El Chupacabra having a meal then become the next one.  How’s that for a monster tale?

lqjlkekldagpy

El Cucuy is Latin America’s Boogeyman.  He lives under your bed or in your closet is waiting for the lights to go out and for your parents to go to bed.  Usually he will get you only if you are not well behaved in the night hours but that has long been extended being attacked no matter what!  So watch yo self!  This is another one of the ghost stories that parents tell their kids so that they can get them to go to bed on time.  They have depicted him and called him in different ways across Latin America but in Mexico he is a man that is dressed in black with a monstrous face.  He devours children, and adults, that look at him when he approaches.  All the horror movie scenes where a child pulls up the covers while something breathes on the other side – El Cucuy cabron!!!  Chale, no mames that crap is scary.  If you let the covers down in your curiosity to find out what it is te va de madre.  So beware because he is everywhere.

Make sure to check out my fellow COLLABERS and their ghost stories!!  Thanks for the read and watch out for those that go bump in the night.

What Are You Supposed To Be??

This is something that I have heard quite often over the years, “…So what are you supposed to be?” Mainly I credit my appreciation for the non-traditional costumes at Halloween time. Monsters always get you looking, but a smart and witty design will keep them looking and draw them in to ask that great question!

This is something that I have heard quite often over the years, “…So what are you supposed to be?”  Mainly I credit my appreciation for the non-traditional costumes at Halloween time. Monsters always get you looking, but a smart and witty design will keep them looking and draw them in to ask that great question!

This week on the FALL COLLABORATION we will be delving into why we choose the outfit we choose and how we put it together!

Option 1 – Deadpool

My traditional selection would be the infamous and pretentious comic/hero/potty-mouth savior in red.  This movie, while it missed the mark for me cinematically, is funny, action-packed, and introduces us to a super-hero that we can all relate to a little more than Thor or Iron Man (because none of us have either a British accent or a trillion bucks).  This gives you the freedom to actually live a little in the costume!  You can dance around instead of walk like a mummy and you can crack jokes as opposed to silently wearing the Jason mask you have donned every year since high school.  The character behind the costume is just as important as how it looks.  Deadpool is a great selection because the outfit is something that you can find most anywhere online.  This does mean that you will have stiff competition but that is part of the fun.  You get to have fake weapons at your side – even though here in the south you can’t be sure they are fake or if they are ACTUAL Desert Eagles.  All around this uniform or costume is just great!!  It looks great, helps you to pick up a great personality that you can have fun with, and I can see it leading to a great night no matter where you’re going.  This costume will be a simple design – just put it on and zip it up.  You can be creative with the weapons and all but your face will be covered so you can skip the make-up art with this selection.

deadpool

Option 2 – The BFG

By BFG we mean the main monster from the film The Big Friendly Giant.  A lot of people would not dare put this on to go to a Halloween party or get-together!!  I’m not sure why but I think it’s genius.  It looks funny, gives you permission to rock high-water trousers, gives you a trumpet as a prop, and styles your hair in a priceless bald/bowl cut my dad wears because that’s all he’s got.  This would be my pick for a non-traditional costume that will make people have to guess what you are dressed as.  This in turns stirs a conversation and boom!  You are in the door as far as making friends and meeting new people.  Isn’t making new friends, and vampires sucking human blood, what Halloween is all about anyway?  The image I selected definitely qualifies as goofy in all its definition but nonetheless I am convinced that this costume will keep them guessing, laughing, make you the star of the party and will be different than most you will see out on the town.  You can purchase from a large selection of different takes on this outfit or make your own.  One thing is key here – all the clothes should be too small for your except your shoes.  You will need a wig and maybe a trumpet to complete this look but the rest you can find at Savers for really cheap.

bfg

Option 3 – Leatherface

The last selection for this year is a well-known and respected monster.  Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a great outfit because of the blood and gore and the chainsaw that you get to wear.  I chose this character because there is a new film that will be released this year by the name Leatherface.  It allows you to run around yelling and screaming and scaring everyone around you.  You are going to concentrate the most on this outfit because there is not one way to get this done.  The most important aspects are going to be the long-sleeve cut-up and bloody shirt, old and tattered trousers (probably some old church slacks that are too large for you with suspenders), and boots!  The boots should be rubber boots because that is what he originally wore in the 1974 version.  As far as the face, well you can purchase a mask or make your own!!  Mwuahahahahah.  Just kidding.  Don’t take anyone out and wear their face – thanks bud.  Buy a mask and a wig and make sure they are covered in what looks like blood!  The chainsaw needs to be fake.  This is for safety concerns of course.  If you can’t find one but insist on a chainsaw, use a broken one that doesn’t work anymore but be super careful.  I advise if children are going to be near, avoid this.

leatherface

No matter what you choose for this Halloween, give it your own twist!!  Have fun and be creative with what you wear.  Remember to also make it comfortable because you want to walk a lot or dance you need mobility!  Check out my fellow COLLABERS on what they are wearing this season.

5 Horror Films To Die For

When you looked down at the stairwell all you saw was black!

The genre of Horror films has a special place in my heart – and I don’t go there very often!  For a reason of course.  My childhood was filled with excitement and bewilderment due in large part because my family shared a 100-year old house with another family.  This thing was huge, creepy, squeaky and jam-packed with crazy people, myself excluded.  My best friend to-date and his family lived downstairs while my family lived upstairs.  When you looked down at the stairwell all you saw was black!  Add to this that my younger brother and I were in constant competition with my buddy and his younger brother; matching our bravado and macho in any activity including Horror Movies.  I saw the worst ones made way way way too young.

With October comes Halloween and a plethora of horror movies will flood our television screens very soon.  The following are my top 5 rated horror films so that you can weed out the duds and focus on the stuff that will make you sleep with the closet light on and hugging the bear you got for valentine’s day last year.

I warn you that my list will not resemble a lot of shortlists in this categories.  When I choose a film to watch I have to be convinced that there is more than just ghouls and ghosts at every corner.  I have to be immersed in the story, care about the characters and most importantly, the fear has to be deeper than face value.  A monster is somewhat scary, but the realization that your past will haunt you forever is man’s worst nightmare.

  • The Sixth Sense (1999)6-sense

I love this film for so many reasons.  In order to keep the conversation sweet and short, I’ll include the most obvious.  The director, M. Night Shyamalan, has got to be one of the most innovative and creative storytellers to ever grace the screen.  His plot twists and character depth grab a hold of you so tightly that he is able to run subtle details right under your nose and you won’t even notice.  This film delves into the most popular and on-demand subject matter which is the paranormal and psychology but it will take you where you least expect by the end.  If you have not seen it, then are you really even alive…?  I hope you see what I did there.

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)freddy-2

I’m sure that 90 percent of those reading this have seen this film and that’s part of why I include it in my favorites.  This is one of those films that I saw way too young and that really screwed with my head.  I mean it’s the perfect premise to mess with any childhood – if you fall asleep, then you die!  Smiley Face!  This film was made in 1984 which is fours years before I was born but it spawned a collection of films with one common denominator – Freddy Krueger.  He is undoubtedly a staple of October, Halloween, Trick-or-Treat, and Horror.  You can run when you are awake but what do you when you’re asleep and Freddy takes control?  Krueger is a boss.

  • Baskin (2015)baskin

For those with a weak stomach and a photographic memory – you have been warned.  This film is for those that are truly intrigued with how far a film will go to try to get at your psyche and soul and for those that don’t mind guts and gore.  This film was meant to take you right to the belly of H-E-double hockey sticks and it gets you there quick.  Without divulging the entire movie let me just say that it will creep you out and imprint images of horror in your brain that you couldn’t wash away with all the Clorox wipes in the world.  Beware!

  • The Exorcist (1973)exorcist

Without a doubt, one of the most talked about horror and suspense films ever made.  It is said that when this film was first shown in theaters around the globe, the audience raced out in herds because of the images, vibe, and overall subject matters it dealt with.  That was then and this is now – but not a thing has changed.  This film is on my list because it deals with more than just ghosts and goblins.  It starts the conversation containing God and Devil;  Good and Evil;  Light and Dark;  and the most important one yet – they are more real than we care to admit and all around us.  I saw this movie at a very young age and I’ll never forget the moment it became too real and unbearable to take.  I cried, then ran, then had to be soothed like if I was a toddler.  Granted I was about 7 or 8 but that fact alone rests my case which is the following:

There is something very real, tangible, and palpable about the spiritual realms.  Most ignore it their entire lives and never think twice.  But that is fool-hearty.  They say children see your soul right in your eyes – it’s a sense that God has granted them in their innocence and as time goes by we lose it because we are marred by society, troubles and conflicts, and our selfish journey to grandness.  There is something sinister and almost too accurate in this film that resonates more with children and even with adults.  You can’t watch this film without feeling some sense of uneasiness, curiosity, and the need for faith in something larger than yourself.

  • The Babadook (2014)babadook-3

This film makes the hairs on the back of your neck raise from the moment that it begins.  The casting of this film introduces 3 main characters that you will sympathize with immediately.  A single mother that does not remember what love is and that mundanely, and in a zombie-like trance, traverses each day with the same 2 things in her hands.  In the right hand, she holds regret.  In the left hand, she holds hopelessness.  Her son, which is ingeniously portrayed, has problems at school, is an introvert, is awkward as F-&*, and sees something in his room at night.  Then there is the thing that goes thump in the night.  It creeps its way into their metaphysical world in the most unexpected way but they both end up finding out that it has been with them all along.  In fact, it is them and they are it.  By the end of the film, we learn the true definition of the phrase “Your past haunts you forever.”  If you have not seen this film I bid you farewell with 2 things –

  1.  Watch during morning hours – It won’t help or matter anyway.
  2. Don’t…watch…alone.

REGNAT POPULUS! Arkansas in the Fall: Top 5!

I had the opportunity to live in many states but Arkansas has got to be the most interesting and diverse!

With this chapter of the FALL COLLABORATION, I have the great privilege of introducing readers to the great state of Arkansas!!   I had the opportunity to live in many states but Arkansas has got to be the most interesting and diverse!  It goes without saying that in 1863 when Arkansas was admitted into the Union the motto was Regnat populus – which translates to “The People Rule!”  The following is a list of some of the great places to visit and events to attend when Fall comes to The Natural States.

1- Thorncrown Chapel        Eureka Springs, AR               All Year Round  thorcrown

Over six million people have visited this magical chapel since it was opened in 1980.  This magnificent piece of architecture was placed fourth on the list of the top buildings of the twentieth century.  You can visit it any time of year but the fall colors are what make this place a delightful venue for weddings and sightseeing.  The town that it is in is also amazing and has that perfect small-town vibe offering big-time laughs and entertainment.

2- Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair    Fort Smith, AR        September 23 – October 1

The Fair is a must-see!  People come from all over in order to get in on the larger-than-life drumsticks, the amazing cotton candy art, the Livestock and Creative Arts Competitions, the Fair Rides, Concerts, Rodeo, and so much more.  The Fair takes place in a lot of different places all at once.  It just depends on if you want to see a Hypnotist, if you’re interested in the Kachunga Alligator Show, or if you want to see all the shows and concerts at Kay Rogers Park.  There is something for everyone in the family at the State Fair and it opens its doors only in the Fall.

3- Mount Magazine State Park                                     All Year Roundasp_mtmag_2014_img_lg_08

Fall has never looked so spectacular.  Even though it takes a little more time for the changes in color to come over this state park, the Fall weather makes it the perfect time to hit the trails.  Hiking, lodging and cabins, horseback riding, canoes on a lake, rafting over rapids, mountain biking, hang gliding, ATV tours, and camping are all available here.  If one of the listed options doesn’t make you smile with excitement, I going to guess that it’s because you have never tried it before!  Word to the wise – get to Mount Magazine and “Just Do Et.”

4-  Fayetteville, AR & Razorback Stadium                   Septemter 3 – Novermber 25

razorback-stadium-1I decided to link the two because of their mutual existence.  Fayetteville is a young vibrant city full of energy, commerce, health, and beauty.  Part of what makes this town so popular and bustling is the University of Arkansas campus that is nestled right in the heart of this place.  For the sports fan in the state, this is the place to be to see Razorback Football, Basketball, and all other college division sports.  Fayetteville is also home to the infamous Dickson Street!  Bars and live bands, the best food, and entertainment at your fingertips.  Needless to say, this college town is much more than a college town now and to visit it is to see something new every time!

5- Magic Springs & Crystal Falls

Magic Screams     Oct 8 – Oct 30    &    Cooler Sundays    Sept 23 – Oct 30

Located in beautiful Hot Springs, AR, this water and theme park offers a load of fun for all the family!  With admission to both at the same time you are sure to get your share of soaking and thrill-seeking fun!  The special events offered through Fall are Magic Screams and Cooler Sundays.  Magic Scream is Halloween town all over the place.  Ghost and ghouls jumping out at every corner, witches flying over-head, and waiting in line for a ride or game is not boring anymore when werewolves are trying to snatch you!  It’s a whole lot of fun and will definitely keep you giggling and on your toes.  Cooler Sundays is the opportunity to bring a cooler full of any goody that you want into the park with you at time of admission !!  Sound crazy?  It is but Magic Springs offers it every year.  This way you can have lots of fun and be able to carry your favorite snacks with you everywhere you go.

With so much to do and so much to see, Arkansas allows you to wake up every morning and experience something fresh and exciting.  Sometimes the only thing that lacks is the energy to keep up with all there is to visit!!

Many more where those came from and throughout the FALL COLLABORATION, I will be sharing more of the place I call home with all our readers.  Make sure to check out my fellow collaborators below as they share their homes with you and what do to “When In Rome… In Fall.”

Cheers!

I will always remember Coach Almonds class…

I remember that I was in the Seventh Grade.  I was in Social Studies with my best friend, Jason B.  We had Coach Almond in that class which meant a lot of fun and jokes!  It was a great way to start off your day; we loved first period.

On that day, we were studying for a quiz in groups.  Naturally, this meant that Jason and I were our own group and we were talking and laughing about everything else but the quiz.

In comes Mr. Marshall, the principle.  “Hey!  Have you heard what’s going on?”

The smile on Coach Almonds face lost its perk.  “No… What’s up?”

“Does this TV work?” Replied Marshall.  He plugged it into the wall and started to scan for channels.  In a matter of seconds, there it was.  It was the image of two large buildings; somewhere in a big city, and one was on fire.  I could tell there was fire because of all of the smoke emanating from its side.

“It’s all over the news.  It was an airplane.”  Marshall motioned for Coach Almond to get nearer.  “We are going to go about our day as normal.  When we figure things out, we can answer questions.  Sad part is that when they get home that’s all they are going to hear; about the attacks.”

One girl on the other side of the room started to cry.  She asked what that was and why did it happened.

Coach Almond looked at all of us and said, “Don’t worry kiddos, everything is fine here at home.  But somewhere real close someone is going to need your prayers.  Those of you and your family.”

Justin spoke up and said, “But what’s going on?  We don’t even know what’s going on.”

Coach Almond turned around and turned off the TV.  “Soon, you will.  The whole world will.  And it will change everything.”

My remembrance of September 11, 2001, is specific.  I was too young and too involved in my own things to appreciate it back then, but I know now that many had to give their lives to save lives.  Men and women that put others first, and gave their all to help.  Those are the people that we respect and that we miss.  We will always be Stumped as to how they got in and who’s fault was it that they were successful at causing us pain.  But now that’s a waste of time.  Instead let us remember those that didn’t hesitate to act, at a seconds notice, when push really turned to shove.

We love you all.  We needed you and you were there.  We need you still but understand the determination you had to save others.

You can read the names of those that were present here.

The Light Does So Much

There’s one plant in my house. It’s in a corner of the living room sitting under a medium size lamp with a dark brown shade. When the lamp is off, the bright green leaves are not so bright.

There’s one plant in my house.  It’s in a corner of the living room sitting under a medium size lamp with a dark brown shade.  When the lamp is off, the bright green leaves are not so bright.  The heavy curtains covering the window on the opposite side of the room allow only a small amount of sunlight to reach the plant.  It’s hidden away like that.  The leaves drape downward, the bark seems bare and uninteresting.

light-shining-through-window

Then you open up the curtains and pull up the blinds.  A rush of light envelopes the plant and the details to its character start to come through.  IMG_2268aLike the fact that on the under-side of each leaf there are veins of different shades of green that zig zag across it.  The bark of the plant tells a more interesting story.  It’s marred by its experience in nature; in the world.  Chipped by the wind and gnawed by wild life.  Albeit, the bark is strong and exudes presence; perseverance.

In the light, it’s not as short.  The plant jumps up at your eyes almost like a child waving it’s hands in the air.  It compliments the room.  Although different furniture and accessories adorn the walls, the plant is the only living, breathing thing.  It’s the only one with freedom because it’s the only thing that can grow.  While wear and tear will deteriorate everything around it, it will become more valuable with time.  It will develop and continue to breath.

Be the plant.  Don’t be afraid of the light.  You look great in it.fe iStock_000049038206_Medium

I saw this post on the Internet and was absolutely captivated by this picture.  It’s hard to explain what emotions and ideas it generated.  Freedom, fear, life, and so much more just from starring at this.  It’s so much to take in and it’s almost hard to imagine what it would be like to actually be in that position. I’ll let you take a look.  Let me know what you think.  5 thumbs up on my behalf.
